The Stubbornness and Determination: Keys to Career Success

Chapter 1: The Nature of Career Development
A career isn’t merely a collection of skills or a profession; it evolves into a core part of who you are. Over time, your personal attributes and experiences inevitably seep into your professional life.
You cannot maintain two vastly different personas at work and home. The way you address challenges, accept feedback, and develop habits will eventually reveal your true self. While the nuances may be subtle, over time, colleagues will perceive your home life dynamics.
To thrive in the tech or corporate sectors, being determined is essential. Early in my career, my manager imparted a crucial lesson:
“If you don’t advocate for yourself, you won’t achieve your goals!” This encompasses everything from salary to promotions and recognition.
Many believe that simply performing well will automatically bring success, but that’s often a misconception. Most organizations have a hierarchy, with senior and junior roles. Seniors typically resist appearing less capable than juniors, while juniors often vie for advancement.
This competitive landscape underscores the importance of personality traits when selecting a career path. If you aim to accelerate your rise, there are strategies to employ.
Navigating the workplace often involves an element of mental strategy. Whether you realize it or not, others are already playing this game, and many are doing so quite effectively.
Mental strategy doesn’t imply undermining others; rather, it involves making intelligent decisions that enhance your career trajectory.
A supportive senior colleague might offer guidance on projects, but they won’t advocate for your promotion or salary increase. That responsibility falls to you. While they can advise you on how to present your case, it’s ultimately up to you to assert yourself.
Chapter 2: The Importance of Communication
Being introverted isn’t advantageous in the workplace. To advance, you need strong communication skills, alongside a tenacity and zeal for career growth.
Being determined and passionate doesn’t equate to negativity or harm; rather, it reflects a commitment to your ambitions and a drive for professional development.
If you're starting out, aim for promotion to senior roles. If you’re already senior, strive to become a team lead, and so forth. Each advancement comes with increased responsibilities and compensation—offering opportunities for growth.
The successful individuals I know share common traits; they fiercely protect their work from being misattributed to others. They are resolute about their achievements and eager for salary increases. They understand their worth and how to claim it.
How can you ensure you receive what you deserve?
Every organization operates differently, but there are strategies to secure recognition for your hard work. Within the company’s framework, you can always approach your manager about a salary increase. If they indicate it’s not feasible currently, follow up with two essential questions: “When?” and “How?”
How can you position yourself for that raise? Is there a certification you should pursue? What steps can you take to strengthen your case for a promotion?
Then, inquire about timing: “When can I expect this increase? Is it this quarter, next quarter, or contingent on specific goals?” This structured approach can help align your career trajectory.
Successful navigation of these conversations requires clear communication with your supervisors and other influential colleagues.
As you immerse yourself in your company, you will uncover additional pathways to achieve your career aspirations.
