Embracing Setbacks: The Path to Long-Term Success
Written on
Chapter 1: Understanding Success and Setbacks
Success is often portrayed as a straight line, but the reality is quite different. It is characterized by peaks and valleys, and how we respond to challenges significantly influences our long-term achievements.
This month marks a turning point for me on Medium, where my earnings will be lower than in previous months. Does this signify failure? Should I consider quitting? I have yet to join the ranks of those making a thousand dollars, and my current situation feels even more distant than before.
Success is not always a constant.
Success is rarely a straightforward journey; it is filled with fluctuations. What truly matters is our reaction to these challenges. If I were to throw in the towel simply because Medium has deemed my work less valuable this month, I would be abandoning my aspirations and the joy that writing brings me.
I am working toward a goal, even if the path remains obscured. There is something waiting for me at the end, though it may not be the grand vision I initially envisioned.
Section 1.1: The Relative Nature of Success
It's easy to become fixated on the "more is better" mentality. Have you ever paused to reflect on your progress? Sometimes I engage in a mental exercise where I recall an older piece I deemed successful and compare it to something more recent.
After making this comparison, I check the metrics of the older story, convinced of its success at the time. Typically, it garners fifty to a hundred claps and a couple of comments. That was considered a win back then.
We can only gauge how far we've come by looking back.
Subsection 1.1.1: Gaining Perspective
Section 1.2: A Broader View
Taking a step back to assess the larger picture can be enlightening. For instance, my earnings per read in April were 9.4 cents, a significant increase from the previous month’s 5.2 cents. Despite the overall total being lower, I must remind myself that my performance is actually improving.
We need to take moments to appreciate our current position in our journey. I’m not at the peak yet, but I can see the clouds beginning to clear.
Chapter 2: Learning Through Experience
As I continue to write, I receive varying levels of feedback. Each clap or lack thereof provides insights. With over 270 stories written, I’ve learned what resonates with my audience and what doesn’t.
While some topics perform better, I refuse to limit myself to just one genre. My fiction, although not as popular, ignites my passion, which is why I persist in writing it.
Section 2.1: The Importance of Persistence
The digital landscape is filled with content creators who share a common trait: they didn’t give up. Quitting is the easy way out. There are countless distractions that don’t require the mental effort that writing demands.
I could easily spend hours scrolling through Reddit, indulging in mindless entertainment. Yet, there’s an undeniable allure in creating content online, where thoughts transform into tangible ideas that resonate with others.
Magic.
Platforms like Medium elevate this experience by compensating us for our written words.
Section 2.2: Accepting Minor Setbacks
For seven consecutive months, my earnings have steadily increased. I anticipated that this streak might eventually falter, and now it seems this month will be the first dip in earnings.
Is this a failure? Not at all; it’s merely a minor setback. It will take far more than a drop in earnings to silence my voice.
