# Embracing the Present: Fundraising Strategies for Success

Chapter 1: The Power of One Day at a Time
The phrase "one day at a time" is a guiding principle that I incorporate into my daily life, especially when it comes to nonprofit fundraising. This approach can be incredibly beneficial for all of us involved in this field.
For those who have participated in recovery programs, this concept may resonate deeply. It has become a source of tranquility for me, helping to keep my focus sharp. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the looming deadlines, such as the major event scheduled in six months, the upcoming board meeting, or the urgent appeal that needs to be dispatched soon. How can we genuinely embrace the idea of tackling one day at a time amidst these pressures?
The key lies in living in the present. It’s about redirecting our thoughts away from past events or future uncertainties. Ultimately, today is the only time we truly possess. Whether it’s preparing for an event, finalizing an appeal for a client, or meeting with potential donors, I remind myself that I can only control my actions today. My focus is on doing everything possible to ensure their success.
Here’s my strategy:
I maintain a daily task list for each project. This list is concise—not an overwhelming twenty items long, but typically around six tasks. Some days, it might even be just two items. During the day, I devote my attention solely to these tasks, allowing me to channel my energy effectively.
The outcome? I feel a greater sense of calm and focus concerning my work. Interestingly, the more effort I dedicate to planning and creating, the more at ease I become with the results.
Embracing one day at a time doesn’t imply neglecting future responsibilities; rather, it means I commit to doing my utmost today to lay the groundwork for future success.
A great illustration of this principle is a special event. On the day of the event, I walk into the venue and take a moment to assess the preparations, confident that my team and I have done everything possible to ensure its success. Similarly, with an e-appeal, once I send it to a client, I know I’ve put forth my best effort and that it's ready for distribution.
By concentrating on my daily tasks and staying present, I can reduce distractions and mental clutter related to things that aren’t happening in the moment.
I encourage you to give this approach a try! Step outside your comfort zone. Offer your support to friends and colleagues. And remember to practice kindness.
