How to Overcome Feelings of Failure: A Path to Resilience

Chapter 1: A Personal Reflection
Witnessing my father's tears was a profound experience.
The emotional toll and despair I felt after the financial crisis of 2008 were overwhelming. The real estate development venture I had dedicated two years to was obliterated. This project meant everything to me and represented a significant part of my aspirations.
Then came September 15, 2008, when the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers sparked a worldwide financial panic. Within weeks, all my efforts, time, and resources invested in that endeavor became worthless.
During this challenging period, my father shared a poignant story about my grandfather's struggles during the Great Depression of the 1930s.
“Jobs were scarce, Alex. Countless businesses failed. Your grandfather had to work in the harsh desert to build roads, a government project aimed at keeping people employed,” he recounted, his voice trembling with emotion.
Tears welled in my father's eyes as he continued, “Your grandfather would leave home for weeks at a time, enduring extreme heat and dangers like venomous snakes. We were cut off from him, and uncertainty loomed over our family.”
He paused, lost in thought, reflecting on the hardships.
“Your grandmother faced her own battles. There was no sunscreen back then, and your grandfather returned home physically battered every time.”
I sat in silence, absorbing the weight of his words.
“That is what real hardship looks like, Alex,” he emphasized, locking eyes with me. “Yet, not once did I hear him complain!”
With a firm grip on my arm, he added, “I recognize how hard this failure feels for you, but remember, your struggles are nothing compared to those faced by others in life!”
“I understand, Dad!” I replied.
“Now, stand up and get back to work,” he instructed as he left the room.
In that moment, I felt the depth of my father's love and authority resonate within me. His story of my grandfather provided me with crucial perspective.
Now, regarding your question, “Why do I feel like a failure? How can I overcome this feeling?”
I know it's challenging; I've faced similar feelings many times. However, I've learned that the first step is to pause and appreciate all that I have in my life, and then literally “get up and keep working!”
Perspective alters our emotions.
You may sense that you are failing, but that perception does not define your reality. Gain some perspective, practice gratitude, and continue moving forward.
