The Ultimate Guide to Building a $100k/Year Online Business

Written on

Introduction

If you find yourself endlessly scrolling through social media, you're likely squandering your potential and valuable time. However, if you're using social platforms to gain new skills and generate income, congratulations on joining the elite 1%.

Understanding the Power of Social Media for Income

I was once skeptical about the idea of earning money through Twitter. "How could anyone make a profit from tweets?" I thought dismissively. But after some research, I discovered that many people are indeed making money through the platform.

The key is to create content that resonates with your interests and experiences, which in turn provides value to others. This realization led me to create my Twitter account in March 2021. Rather than wasting time figuring everything out on my own, I decided to invest in a course that cost me $79 and outlined a clear path to earning $100k.

It was a wise investment. I noticed that successful creators focused on popular topics such as:

  • Finance
  • Investing
  • Self Improvement
  • Philosophy
  • Fitness
  • Masculinity
  • Technology
  • Online Business
  • Politics & News
  • Relationships

These subjects tend to attract substantial followings, which translates to income. I decided to follow suit, and here's how you can do it too.

Step 1: Define Your Niche and Profile

Based on my observations, effective social media influencers typically operate within three primary categories: Health, Wealth, and Relationships. These are the main areas that appeal to most individuals. I chose to focus on 'Wealth,' specifically Personal Finance, Investing, and Self Improvement, which align with both my interests and my expertise.

To find your niche, ask yourself: "What topic could I discuss for hours with friends and family?" For instance, if you’re passionate about fitness and enjoy weightlifting, your focus would naturally fall into the Health category.

Once you’ve selected your niche, you should optimize your profile with a banner, profile picture, and a bio that clearly states what you offer and how it benefits your audience. Here’s a snapshot of my Twitter profile as of February 28, 2022:

Step 2: Drive Traffic to Your Profile

The term 'traffic' refers to the number of visitors to your profile. As of now, I have over 6000 followers—only 1% of Twitter users exceed 2000 followers. Each of these individuals represents a potential customer for either products I create or those I promote.

While not every follower will purchase from you, Twitter allows you to reach millions monthly, making it an ideal platform for beginners.

To attract followers, focus on providing value through educational, entertaining, or inspirational content. Here’s an example of a valuable tweet that garnered hundreds of new followers:

“Building wealth is about adding value to others’ lives.”

To further enhance your visibility, engage with established accounts by commenting meaningfully on their tweets. For example, instead of a generic response, you could say:

“Absolutely! Additionally, investing in stocks or real estate can accelerate your wealth-building journey.”

By consistently adding value through 40-50 comments a day, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a recognized creator.

Step 3: Your Offer

After establishing your profile and engaging meaningfully, it's time to present your offer. I recommend waiting until you have 2000-3000 followers before promoting your own products, but you can start affiliate marketing right away. I made my first sale just four days into my Twitter journey.

When selling, remember these rules:

  • Always provide value first; avoid spamming your audience with offers.
  • Only promote products you trust and have used yourself.
  • Ensure the products align with your brand.

For instance, my focus is on wealth-building and self-improvement, so I promote relevant products that resonate with my audience.

Step 4: Consistency is Key

Creating a visually appealing profile or crafting the best content is futile if you only commit for a short time. Success requires hard work and consistency. Many who replace their 9-5 jobs with social media have done so because they remained dedicated.

Avoid common pitfalls such as:

  • Focusing solely on content creation without engaging with others.
  • Neglecting to interact with your followers.
  • Maintaining a low-quality profile.
  • Over-promoting products without establishing trust.

Step 5: Building Your Business

Congratulations, you've made it this far! Here’s a quick recap:

  • You’ve chosen your niche.
  • Your profile is optimized.
  • You’re providing valuable content and engaging with followers.
  • You’re consistently building your follower base.
  • You’re starting to generate income through affiliate sales.

Now, to scale your business: shift your audience off Twitter to other platforms like Medium or your personal blog. This creates a funnel from awareness to purchase and retention.
